Cake Decorating Magazines - Can You Really Learn To Decorate Cakes From Them?

If you'd like to know how to decorate cakes that will have your family and friends gasping in admiration at your handiwork, you may have been tempted to buy cake decorating magazines. After all, they feature beautifully decorated cakes on their glossy pages and make it seem that just by reading the instructions, yours will turn out just like the photo.

But do you really need cake decorating magazines in order to beautifully decorate a cake?

Of course, anything worth doing needs some time and practice put into it, and it's fun looking for inspiration in books and magazines. If you're a complete novice, then yes, I think you would need some advice and instruction in order to decorate a cake.

If it's your first time, then pick an easy design to master. When I was in high school, every student in my home economics

class made a Christmas cake and we decorated it with traditional fondant icing, with piped icing along the sides. They all looked gorgeous when they were ready to take home and very professional. That was the first time our class had learned cake decoration.

Another tip is to make sure you have everything at hand before you start. There's nothing worse than to start icing and then realise you don't have the next crucial ingredient and you don't have time to run to the store to get it!

If you want your design to be for a special occasion, then do a test run first, especially if you're a novice. You definitely don't want it NOT to turn out and be embarrassed in front of friends and family.

Although cake decorating magazines can be helpful, they're not the be all and end all, as you'll see below.
